WordPress modules Forms Shield

A privacy-friendly reCAPTCHA alternative for WordPress

reCAPTCHA loads Google scripts and sends data about your visitors' behaviour to Google. If you do not want that, you need spam protection that runs locally on your own server. Forms Shield does that for WordPress, without an external anti-bot service and without tracking cookies.

How to go about it

  1. Map what you load nowSee which forms use reCAPTCHA or another external service, and on which pages that script loads.
  2. Replace it with local checksUse protection that assesses on your own server, without sending data to a third party.
  3. Remove the external scriptTake reCAPTCHA out of your forms, so no Google script loads any more.
  4. Update your cookie and privacy statementsRemove the external service from your statements once it is no longer used.

Frequently asked questions

Why is reCAPTCHA a privacy issue?

Because it loads Google scripts and sends data about visitor behaviour to Google. You need to be clear about that in your privacy statement and cookie policy.

How does Forms Shield stop spam without Google?

With checks on your own server, also for bots that post forms around the page. Suspicious submissions go to quarantine.

Does Forms Shield store personal data?

A raw IP address is never stored.
