Checking and reviewing alt text in WordPress

Good alt text describes what an image means in that place. Decorative images get an empty alt text instead. AI can make suggestions, but a person has to review them. In WordPress the fastest way is from one overview, not page by page in the media library.

How to go about it

  1. Find the images without a reviewStart with an overview of what has not been checked yet.
  2. Review the suggestionDoes the description match what the image means on the page? Approve or edit.
  3. Mark decorative imagesA decorative line or background needs no description; it gets an empty alt text.
  4. Do not forget the other fieldsFeatured images and ACF image fields need alt text too.

How Alt Text Review fits in

Beta

Alt Text Review is a review dashboard right under Media, with a counter for images that still need review. Per image you approve an AI suggestion, edit it or mark it as decorative. Content Checklist also checks the alt text of featured images and ACF fields.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just use AI alt text?

Better not without a check. AI does not always know what an image means in that place. Let a person review every suggestion.

What do I do with decorative images?

Give them an empty alt text, so screen readers skip them. In Alt Text Review you mark them as decorative.

Where do I find the dashboard?

Right under Media in WordPress, with its own action button per image.
